In the next edition of Metallurgy, Coquesul/CDS brings to the specialized public two solutions that have stood out for combining technical performance and environmental responsibility: Cardiff Coal Dust and Additive Coal Powder (PCA). Both options were developed to meet the growing demands of the foundry industry, which seeks more efficient processes, products with superior finishes and production practices that reduce costs and environmental impacts.
Coquesul/CDS’s participation in the event reinforces its commitment to offering high-quality inputs, research results, careful selection of raw materials and attention to the specific needs of each customer.
Cardiff Coal Powder is widely used in the preparation of green molding sand. Its main function is to provide a better surface finish to the parts and reduce their cleaning time, thus ensuring more precision in the final result of the castings.
The product is manufactured with special raw materials and controlled quality, which ensures stability in performance and reliability in the process. This consistency is a decisive factor for foundries that work with high production volume and need to maintain high quality standards in all batches.
By opting for Coquesul/CDS’s Cardiff Coal Powder, companies have the security of having an input that responds predictably to process variables, reducing waste and rework.
PCA: THE EVOLUTION IN THE USE OF COAL ADDITIVES
Coal Powder Additive (PCA) is the result of the search for a more efficient and economical solution for foundries. It completely replaces Cardiff Charcoal Powder, being possible to use 1/3 of the amount to obtain equal or superior results.
The use of Additive Coal Powder results in excellent surface finish of the castings, eliminates gaseous defects, reduces blasting time, reduces dust generation in handling and shakeout, results in savings in bentonite consumption (10% to 30% less), improves the permeability of the sand to green (15 to 40 AFS more). In addition, the use of the input reduces the moisture of green sand by more than 0.5% and eliminates degenerate graphite on the surface of modular iron parts, thanks to the very low sulfur content.
Another differential of PCA is its personalized formulation. Coquesul/CDS develops the product considering the specific problems that each foundry faces, adjusting the composition to obtain the best performance according to the green sand used.
The reduction of inputs required in the process and the improvement in the characteristics of the molding sand result in more productivity, less rework, and less sand disposal. With shorter blasting time and reduced defects, foundries are able to optimize delivery times, maintain quality standards, and save resources, both material and energy. In addition, the increase in permeability and the decrease in moisture in green sand contribute to more stable processes, with less risk of defects related to gas retention and finishing problems.
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
One of the highlights of Coquesul/CDS’s work is its contribution to sustainability. By providing the PCA and technically guiding its customers to the efficient use of the product, the company helps reduce the extraction of raw materials such as coal, bentonite and sand, increasing the useful life of mining deposits.
Another positive impact is the reduction in the disposal of foundry sand in industrial landfills, a practice that reduces pressure on disposal areas and minimizes environmental risks. Thus, Coquesul/CDS aligns itself with the efforts of industries to meet increasingly stringent environmental legislation and society’s expectations for more responsible production.
